Elementary Age Arts & Crafts: Abstract Art

"Day and Night"

"Spongebob Gone Right"

Abstract art is a great way to get students to become more confident in their work. Being an art teacher some common statements I hear are "I don't like it." or "It's ugly, can I start over?"

I decided to introduce some of my 2nd and 3rd-grade students to Jean Michel Basquiat. After seeing all of his great accomplishments the students became extremely excited to express themselves in their own way.

Materials:

- Canvas (these are 8x10 inches)

- Paint Brushes

- Water

- Washable paint

- Glitter

- Paper plate or palette

Directions:

  1. Show student(s) some examples of other abstract art. Ask them to observe all of the colors and how they contrast with each other.

  2. Allow student(s) to begin painting whatever they desire.

  3. While the paint is still wet on the canvas add glitter. Attempt to match glitter colors with the paint color.

  4. Shake off the excess glitter.

  5. Allow the painting to dry for at least 24 hours.

  6. Hang or frame for best results.
